Geboren in 1959, Antwerpen, België Woont en werkt in Mexico Stad en in Londen
Francis Alÿs is opgeleid als architect. Eind jaren tachtig vestigde hij zich in Mexico Stad. De vele wandelingen die hij maakt in het centrum van deze metropool vormen de kern van zijn activiteiten. Zijn oeuvre, dat zowel performances, video’s, tekeningen, schilderijen en sculpturen omvat, ontwikkelt hij in verschillende steden van New York en Londen tot Lima en Jeruzalem. Het werk van Alÿs werk bestaat uit gerichte acties die de samenleving en de plaats die kunst daarin inneemt ter discussie stellen. Alÿs beschrijft de context waarin hij als kunstenaar werkt als politiek, in de Griekse betekenis van het woord polis: de stad als plaats van gewaarwordingen en conflicten waaraan de materialen worden onttrokken voor verdichting, kunst en het creëren van stedelijke mythen.

In the midst of the social upheaval of 1968,
thousands of bureaucrats were herded into the Plaza
de la Constructión (Zócalo) to demonstrate in favour
of the government. Showing their frustration in an
act that was both rebellious and ridiculous, they
turned their backs on the official tribune and began
to bleat like a fast flock of sheep.
